You’re invited! Register for the Final Event of PCC’25
We are excited for our summer school Planning the Cycling City at the University of Amsterdam to start soon. During this three week program we will use Amsterdam as our living lab to examine the impacts of history, policy, infrastructure, planning, and culture within the context of urban cycling in the Netherlands. You are invited to the final event, which will also be our July webinar!
On Wednesday, July 16th, from 14:00 to 16:00 CEST, we are hosting the final event during which our summer school students will showcase the insights they've gained by exploring Amsterdam, tackling real-world challenges in cycling policy, planning, and culture. Afterwards, they will receive feedback and reflections from our guest jury.
The event will conclude with the screening of Invisible Commutes, a documentary based on the research of Valentina Montoya Robledo, created in collaboration with Andrés González Robledo and Daniel Gómez Restrepo. The documentary shares the often-overlooked experiences of public transport commuters in Bogotá and Medellín, particularly domestic workers, through two compelling personal testimonials. The screening will be introduced by Valentina Montoya Robledo and followed by a Q&A session.
❗️Register now:
👋 If you are in Amsterdam and want to join in person, please use this link to RSVP. We will email you before the event.

❗️This is an exclusive screening of the Invisible Commutes documentary - it won’t be included in the webinar recording, just like the Q&A. Reserve your spot so you don’t miss it❗️

Souvenirs from Gdańsk: Our time at Velo-City 2025
Earlier this month, parts of the Urban Cycling Institute team made their way to Gdansk for this year’s Velo-city conference. (CEO) joined a panel discussion about bike complexity, where she presented findings highlighting the importance of including the often-overlooked perspectives of fatbike riders in the media discourse. She also moderated a session on citizen involvement.
(Research Fellow) presented findings from the research with City Thread in Bentonville, Arkansas, which showed the effectiveness of leveraging existing municipal resources in cycling planning as well as the role of civic engagement in building social capacity for cycling.
On the second day of the conference, Meredith Glaser - together with Ruth Lamas Borraz - took part in the first edition of ZICLA’s “Sobremesa Talk”, a refreshing and thoughtful space for open conversation about gender and cycling. It was a unique experience to have an exchange with everyone who joined and contributed their perspectives in such a relaxed and meaningful way. It was great to attend the many inspiring sessions, join the energizing outdoor activities, and connect with our friends from the cycling world - both old and new.
Scholarship Recipient in Spotlight: Meet Anastasiia Zhokhova, Urban Cycling Institute's scholarship recipient for the Velo-city conference 2025. Anastasia is a Doctoral Student at Wrocław University of Science and Technology and presented her research for the session, 'Social Power of Cycling' on the topic ‘From Protest to Policy: Can Ukraine’s Cycling Movement Overcome Barriers in Urban Transformation’.

Evaluation report of school-based cycling programmes in Bonaire
As part of our active mobility and health equity project on Bonaire, our colleagues at Baislife Bonaire delivered a 5-week traffic education and cycling lessons programme in one school on the island. The Urban Cycling Institute research team conducted an opportunistic evaluation of this programme earlier in the year, which will inform the scale up of the programme to other schools in 2026! Read the report here.
