World Health Summit | Berlin
How can cities foster cross-sector alliances between public health and transport? What if we talked about the prevention of disease and illness in terms of equitable access to active mobility? What does this mean for global urban health?
Between 13 and 15 October, Berlin welcomed over four thousand delegates to meet at the World Health Summit. Various approaches to tackling public health were discussed at respective sessions. Only one of them, introduced with a keynote by Meredith Glaser to about 150 participants, was dedicated to cities: Cities as a Platform for Health, Equity and Resilient Communities. It was the only session highlighting the role of mobility as a key factor in health. The entire session was recorded, so watch the video below and read about Meredith’s insights here.
The role of car-dominant cities, car-oriented planning, and road danger continue to be swept under the rug as threats to health security and ignored by mainstream public health narratives and global health institutions.

The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) has developed a "Guide for designating cycle route networks" for different levels of government to consider as they continue to integrate cycling into Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans. On behalf of the Chair of Cycling (UGhent), Meredith provided a keynote (September 27) and recommendations for how to expand the impact of this guideline, focusing on local authorities, institutional change, and learning for transitions. You can see Meredith’s pdf of slides here.
